Batsi ist das Touristenzentrum von Andros. Wer nur am Strand liegen will, um anschließend in einer der zahlreichen guten Tavernen zu essen, ist richtig in Batsi. Auch Blicke aus dem Hotelzimmer können schön sein in Batsi. Die Chora dagegen ist .. anders. Chora ist der Hauptort der Insel, und weniger touristisch als dieser ist vermutlich kein Hauptort einer Kykladeninsel. Sicher, er liegt relativ weit weg vom Fährhafen, aber der Hauptgrund für diese relative Entspanntheit, so sagt man, liege darin, dass die dort beheimateten Reederfamilien keinen gesteigerten Wert auf allzu viele Touristen legten. Egal. Chora ist der interessanteste Ort der Insel. Schöne Häuser, ein Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst (selbstverständlich von einem Reeder finanziert) und dieses griechische Laisser-faire, das allein schon für mich der Inbegriff von Urlaub ist.

Whereas Batsi is the center of tourism on the island Andros the Chora is its administrative center. Okay, Batsi has a very nice beach and a lot of good taverns, but if you want to see beautiful buildings, an interesting museum of contemporary art and the relaxed lifestyle which by definition is a very important ingredient for holiday, at least for me, Chora could be the better choice. I just don’t know, if the inhabitants of Chora would appreciate more tourists. It is the hometown of some influential shipowners and they seem to prefer the idea that things should stay as they are.
