Xanthi, located in the north-eastern part of Greece called Thrace, not far away from the greek-turkish border, isn’t exactly what’s called a megalopolis. What makes it quite special is the comparatively high share of students – and a strong muslim minority, some with turkish roots. Others are pomaks, slavic or thracian muslims living in Serbia, Greece and Turkey. During our short stay we didn’t see many students but a lot of muslims. On Saturday morning there was a big market, a great opportunity for street photography.

Xanthi liegt im Nordosten Griechenlands, gar nicht weit entfernt von der griechisch-türkischen Grenze. Die Stadt ist nicht wirklich eine Megalopolis. Was sie in Griechenland besonders macht, ist ihr relativ hoher Anteil an Studenten und ihr großer Anteil an Menschen muslimischen Glaubens, einige mit türkischen Wurzeln, wieder andere sind Pomaken, je nach Betrachtung slawische oder thrakische Muslime, die in Griechenland, Bulgarien und der Türkei leben. Während unseres kurzen Aufenthaltes dort sahen wir nicht viele Studenten, es waren Semesterferien, dafür umso mehr Muslime. Samstags gibt es in Xanthi einen großen Markt, eine gute Gelegenheit für Street-Fotografie.
