In the process of scanning my old black and white film negatives, I discovered two things: the old Ilford XP2 negatives suffered a lot from their long break in the dark and damp basement. Much more than the classic negative films like Kodak TMAX, TRI-X or Ilford HP5. And sometimes, just sometimes, their damage can lead to aesthetically interesting effects. Like in this picture, that seems to be a scan I may have dreamt. The white pony with the flashed eyes in a dark landscape, covered from the tranches of a tree. There is just one thing missing: the horn sticking out of it’s head.
In meinem andauernden Prozess des Scannens alter Filmnegative konnte ich bisher zwei Dinge feststellen: die alten Ilford XP2 Negative haben viel stärker unter ihrem jahrelangen Aufenthalt im dunklen, feuchten Keller gelitten als die klassischen Schwarzweiß-Negativ-Filme wie Kodak TMAX, TRI-X or Ilford HP5. Manchmal führt das zu ästhetisch interessanten Effekten wie in diesem Bild, das ein von mir geträumter Scan sein könnte. Das weiße Pony mit den geblitzten Augen in der dunklen Landschaft, bedeckt von den Zweigen eines Baums. Es fehlt nur eine Sache: ein Horn, das aus seinem Kopf ragt.
